Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is acne in its severe form, where the acne forms cysts filled with pus. A cyst contains a semi-liquid material and is larger than a pustule, which could be severely inflamed, extends into deeper layers of the skin, may be very painful, and can result in scarring.

Cystic acne can appear similar to nodular acne. However, unlike nodular acne, cystic acne is pus-filled. Cystic acne can be painful and scarring is common with cystic acne. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation.

The over activity and plugging of the sebaceous glands causes cystic acne that requires immediate treatment to prevent further complications. Varieties of treatments used to clear cystic acne include both topical and oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives and laser treatments.
